It's is very important that you contact an immigration attorney if you have a criminal record and/or child support issues.
Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)
VAWA was enacted by congress to protect victims of abuses by a U.S. citizen or green card holder. No one should be stuck with their abuser just because they need them to file a green card petition on their behalf.
Among the basic requirements for VAWA, an abused non-citizen must be the spouse, parent or child of an abusive U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Through a self-petitioning process, the abused spouse/child/ parent may apply for immigration status without the knowledge or involvement of the abuser.
Abuse can be physical, financial, emotional, sexual and/or psychological.
YOU DON'T NEED A POLICE REPORT OR COURT ORDER BEFORE FILING FOR VAWA.
